Baby Parades
Baby parades may sound new, but they date back more than 100 years. In 1918, during the “Children’s Year,” the federal government launched a nationwide campaign to reduce infant mortality and improve child health. Communities across the country held baby parades as joyful public reminders of what a healthy childhood looks like.
One of the campaign’s mottos was: “The health of the child is the power of the nation.” That simple idea, that strong kids build strong communities, remains a core tenet of Rx Kids today.
From History to Now
Rx Kids brought back the baby parade concept as a fun, modern way to celebrate children and families.
Just like in 1918, today’s baby parades shine a spotlight on kids and the support families need to help them thrive. Only now, the parades also highlight Rx Kids’ mission to fight child poverty and support every family, from pregnancy through a baby’s first year.
What Happens at a Baby Parade?
Every Rx Kids baby parade is a little different based on the talents of the community they’re held in, but all are full of music, laughter, and joy — and BABIES! Families come together to celebrate babies and young children with fun activities, games, and entertainment. Moms in the program proudly wear “Rx Kids Mom” sashes. Each event features a Grand Marshal from the local community — a leader or champion for children who helps set the tone for the celebration.
In Flint, the parades are held in front of the Rx Kids mural at the Flint Cultural Center. The mural reimagines the historic 1918 poster with modern images of children but keeps the same inspiring slogan: “The health of the child is the power of the nation.”
These gatherings aren’t just events — they’re vibrant reminders that our children are our future, and communities are strongest when families are supported.
