Largest-Ever Rx Kids Survey Shows Strong Benefits for Michigan Families Across 42 Communities

Nearly 3,000 mothers across 42 Michigan communities are sharing a clear message: Rx Kids is making a meaningful difference in their lives and the health of their babies.

Results from the May 2026 participant survey—the largest in Rx Kids history—show that direct cash support is helping families meet basic needs, reduce stress, access healthcare, and build a stronger start for their children. The survey includes responses from 2,985 mothers living in urban and rural communities across Michigan.

Since launching in Flint in 2024, Rx Kids has prescribed more than $43 million directly to families, reaching over 12,000 participants and supporting approximately 9,000 babies across the state.

Rx Kids conducts voluntary participant surveys every six months to gather feedback from families, strengthen the program, and transparently share results. Consistent with previous surveys, the May 2026 survey achieved a 46% response rate and provides important insights into how Rx Kids is supporting family health, financial stability, and overall well-being.

Key findings include:

Financial stability:

Survey results show that Rx Kids is helping families achieve greater financial security and weather unexpected financial challenges.

85% of moms said Rx Kids helped them become more financially secure.
70% said Rx Kids helped them avoid debt.
63% said the money helped them keep their housing by paying rent, mortgage, or other housing costs.
62% said Rx Kids would help them become more self-sufficient in the future.
43% experienced an unexpected financial shock after enrolling in Rx Kids. The most commonly reported shocks included vehicle expenses (67%), job loss (35%), utility bills (29%), inability to pay for basic expenses (17%), and rent or mortgage costs (17%). Of those who experienced a financial shock, 72% said they used Rx Kids payments to help mitigate it.

Families most commonly used their cash prescriptions for:

Baby supplies (94%)
Food (66%)
Utilities (39%)
Transportation (29%)

Among baby-related purchases, the most common items were:

Baby clothes and swaddles (77%)
Diapers and changing supplies (76%)
Bottles and feeding accessories (60%)

Health & well-being

Survey findings also demonstrate how reducing financial stress can improve family well-being and support healthier starts for babies.

96% of moms say their infant attended at least one pediatric appointment.
88% of moms said the money helped reduce stress.
75% said Rx Kids helped them feel more confident caring for their child.
74% said the money helped them take time off from work to care for themselves, their family, or their baby.
69% said the money helped them spend more time with their children.
63% said Rx Kids made it easier to get the healthcare their household needs.
62% said having a program like Rx Kids would influence their decision to have additional children in the future.
